ROMIH Matic

ROMIH Matic (b. 1996, Planina pri Sevnici, Slovenia) is a dedicated educator working at Grm Elementary School in Novo mesto. He is very active in choral singing and has pursued a rich and fulfilling educational journey with prominent Slovenian and international composers. He began his career primarily as a pianist and chorister/singer. His desire to compose emerged only in high school, when he realized that, due to a nerve injury in his hand, he would unfortunately never be competitive as a pianist.He is the recipient of numerous awards, including: the Young Composer Award at the APZ Maribor Choral Competition (2019), third prize at the Prleška suita Choral Competition (2021), first and second prizes at the Darila izročila Choral Competition (2022), and the Student Prešeren Award of the Academy of Music.In addition to his master’s studies under the mentorship of Prof. Vito Žuraj, he has studied with several other renowned composers, such as Iris ter Schiphorst, Carola Bauckholt, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf, Johannes Kalitzke, and Márton Illés. Matic Romih attended the “Next Generation Workshop” new music seminar in Donaueschingen and was an active participant in the one-year “Classwork Project” with Ensemble Recherche in Freiburg.In 2023, Matic Romih achieved significant international recognition at the Rostrum composers’ tribune in The Hague, where his piece The Card Players received the highest number of points in the category of composers under thirty years of age.In 2025, at Grm Elementary School in Novo mesto, Matic Romih premiered his musical Roman and Julija from the Neighboring Street (Roman in Julija iz sosednje ulice), based on Vinko Möderndorfer’s poetry collection Romeo and Julija from the Neighboring Street.
