FAURÉ Gabriel

FAURÉ Gabriel (1845–1924) was a leading French composer, organist, and teacher of the late Romantic and early 20th-century periods.

Born in Pamiers, France, he studied at the École Niedermeyer in Paris. He held prominent organist posts (notably at the Madeleine church) and later became director of the Paris Conservatoire (1905–1920), where he taught a generation of composers including Ravel and Enescu.

Fauré is best known for his elegant, refined style—characterized by subtle harmony, melodic grace, and emotional restraint. His major works include the Requiem (1887–1890), the song cycles La Bonne Chanson and La Chanson d’Ève, numerous mélodies, chamber music (especially piano quartets and the Piano Quintet No. 1), and the nocturnes and barcarolles for piano. His music bridged Romanticism and modernism, influencing French music profoundly while remaining deeply personal and understated.
