ŠTAMPE ŽMAVC Bina

ŠTAMPE ŽMAVC Bina

ŠTAMPE ŽMAVC Bina (Celje, Slovenia; 4 October 1951), writer, children's writer, translator, theatre director, poet, and director (pseudonym: Bina Bard).

She attended primary school and grammar school in Celje. After her matura exam, she studied comparative literature and literary theory at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia. She graduated in 1977 from the Department of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory with a thesis entitled Mikhail Bakhtin: Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics. As a graduate, she found employment in education and taught for five years. She was active in music and theatre. For thirteen years she led a children’s improvisational theatre at the Experimental Theatre Celje, where she worked as director, dramaturg, and author of texts. She is a member of the editorial board of the magazine Poetikon. She lives and works in Celje.

She writes poetry, prose, and dramatic texts, mostly for young readers. She first began publishing poetry for adults in the grammar-school newsletter Brstiči, and later in Dialogi, Mentor, and Obrazi. She has published three collections of sonnets — Pesek v pesmi (1999), Poševno sonce (2001), Opoldnevi (2005) — and others. Among her poetry collections, the most extensive is Čaroznanke (1990); its motivational foundation draws from both everyday life/reality and imaginative experience. In the collection Nebeške kočije (1994) she focuses on the theme of the interconnectedness of the universe, humanity, and nature, while with Klepetosnedke (1996) she returns to the child and his playful relationship with the surroundings. Her narrative works include animal stories (Slike in zgodbe iz tisoč in enega pasjega dne, 1985) and various short fairy-tale and nonsense texts (Popravljalnica sanj, 1992, and Muc Mehkošapek, 1998). The poet invents words; her poems are rhythmic. Her writing for young readers is characterised by imaginative worlds. She also writes plays and puppet works for children, as well as chansons for adults.
