GRIZOLD Davorin

GRIZOLD Davorin

GRIZOLD Davorin (Martin) (November 10, 1817 in Smolnik at Ruše, Slovenia - January 5, 1871 in Smolnik at Ruše, Slovenia), national awakener. Grizold (Grisald, Grisold) was a farmer and self-taught, but he was a skilled speaker and singer, who even before 1848 began to establish himself in his surroundings with improvised versification. He was quite educated for his time and place, he read Slovenian and German, and in 1848 he also learned the Cyrillic alphabet. Soon he was passionate about the Slovene language, sending poems to Drobtinice (1851, 236: Pozdrav slovenske grlice; 1854, 261: Zadovoljni kmet (Satisfied farmer), cf. also Štrekelj IV, 298, 305), writing to Narod and Einspieler's Slovenec. He was a co-founder of the Reading Society in Ruše in 1865 and its first president. His handwritten legacy burned down with his house.
